Full Description:
This year, officials from the City of Rancho Santa Margarita along with students from local schools will kick-off the celebration of Red Ribbon Week with a special Red Tulip Planting Ceremony at City Hall on Monday October 20th at 3:30pm.
The “Plant the Promise – Say No to Drugs” ceremony will symbolize the planting of hope for a drug free lifestyle across the nation. Each participating school will be represented by two students selected through a Red Ribbon Week Poster Contest conducted at each of the schools. These students, along with City Officials, will plant the red tulip bulbs in a specially designated area at City Hall. Most bulbs planted at this time will bloom into vibrant red tulips in April during National Alcohol Awareness Month and will serve as a reminder of the beauty of life when it is drug free. The entire community is invited to attend this Red Ribbon event.
Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country observed annuallv with this year’s celebration taking place during the week of October 23-31st. It serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a visible stand against drugs and to show their personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle through the symbol of the Red Ribbon. Red Ribbon Week began as a way to acknowledge and commemorate the ultimate sacrifice made by Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico in 1985 while fighting the battle against illegal drugs.
